Selabrations is the brainchild of Sela Jane Hopgood - a wife and mother, who for the past decade worked as a journalist for Pacific Media Network, RNZ Pacific and The Spinoff. In 2020, she was one of three recipients of the Mental Health Foundation Journalism Fellows, receiving funding to produce a multimedia project focusing on perinatal depression within the Pasifika community.

Behind Sela Jane's by-line in her articles is her love for gift giving. Sela Jane's professional background in news and media coupled with her engaging presence, attention to detail and excitement to be of service to others in finding gifting solutions to elevate relationships makes her a strong contender in such a saturated market.

It was the festive season of 2020 - Sela Jane was helping her husband with client gift hampers to mark the end of the year, when she joked, "I should get paid for this.." to which her husband encouragingly responded, "Yes! Do it!"

In January 2021, with no experience in running a business, Sela Jane knew how to do a few things to kickstart the journey. She has social media and website management experience from her years in journalism, and more importantly, like all journalists, she knew how to effectively research her answers.

Sela Jane launched Selabrations on Instagram, packing orders on her dining room table, bootstrapping her small business as she grew over the months.

Sela Jane noticed in 2023 a gap in the market for Pacific-inspired home fragrances, so she got to work, began experimenting and in June of that year, launched Selabrations Home: Pacific-inspired candles in the following scents: Koko Alaisa, Watermelon 'Otai and Paifala.

Selabrations (Gift Boxes and Home) is now a full-time gig for Sela Jane with hopes to grow the business to be New Zealand's leading gift box company for customers to express gratitude, kindness and love daily.

The name Selabrations is a play on Sela Jane's name and the idea that every celebration is a gift in itself and deserves to be acknowledged with a carefully considered gift.
